Please bring all trash to the dumpster located at the end of the road (in the winter) and halfway up where the road turns (in the summer).
There is a bin on the deck that fits 1-2 bags of trash. If you leave trash unprotected bears will get into it with almost certainty!
As a courtesy to other residents, please flatten all boxes as the dumpster is on the smaller side.
There is no recycling option outside of bringing it directly to the dump. There are fees for certain materials so please call ahead if this is of interest to you. Information here.
Oven: Following a power outage, the oven will automatically lock. On the right side of the control panel, there is a button that has a picture of a lock on it. You need to press and hold this until you hear a click. Then the oven will be operable again. There is no need pilot light on this model.
Toilet: During a power outage, there is no water supplied to the house because the wellpump is not getting any power. Consequently, this means you get one more flush of the toilets! However, we do keep a couple 5 gallon jugs of water in various closets to force flush the toilets. If you have never flushed a toilet this way, it's hard to explain but this explains it.
Septic: We are on a septic system. Please please please do not flush anything but toilet paper down the toilet. It is a huge deal to get a septic blockage and it will ruin your whole weekend especially if it backs up into the basement! I will spare you the details!
AC and fans: We have two air conditioners for the whole house. We also keep 1-2 fans in each room.
Thermostat: This is controlled by a Nest. Each floor is its own zone with individual thermostats. The house will warm up quickly. And the woodburning stove will heat the first floor very well.
The road is treacherous in the snow and freezing conditions.
Four-wheel or All-wheel drive is encouraged during the winter months.
The road is plowed if there is more than 3-5 inches of snow. We cannot make any guaruntee when the road will be plowed but often it is after a storm has passed.
The driveway will be plowed at the same time as the road.
There is no service for shoveling the steps and we ask that if you are present during a storm to shovel the steps if you can. There is a shovel in the woodshed.
There is also salt available in a white bucket located in the woodshed also.
As you have noticed, there is a beautiful pond view! It is technically private property, but all home owners in the community have access rights. In particular, our property is required to provide right of way to everyone in the neighborhood so don't be alarmed if you see people venturing through our yard!
The pond is swimmable but we don't encourage it since it's full of leeches :(
There is a little metal canoe, but it is very unstable and we do not recommend anyone use it.
In the winter the pond will freeze rather quickly. We cannot say confidently when it is safe to walk on, but if you do, be careful around the edges as they tend to not freeze as solidly. So, anything you do in or on the pond you do so at your own risk.
